Motorcycle club growing its membership and community profile
ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - The Indian Motorcycle Club started last year, has around 70 members already and is still growing while giving back to the community.
Members participate in charity events like Toys for Tots, Jessie Warriors, and they also adopted a family for Christmas. They take part in these events organized through the Elkhart Indian Motorcycle dealership.
It doesn't matter what make or model of motorcycle people have, said club president Terry Reamer.
"As the complement to the Indian Motorcycle Riders dealership in Sept. of 2015, we took on the dealership and as a result, we've started a riders group," Reamer said. "IMRG is national, as well as local. We are the Elkhart chapter of a national organization. "The reason we started is to get folks together with common interests."
Reamer said that although the club may have common interests and get involved in doing good things for the community, there is also another purpose.
"Not only are we very interested in motorcycle riding, but we also assist new riders that want to learn how to ride a motorcycle safely, and make sure that they're prepared and that they're educated as far as what their motorcycle will do and will not do, and how to safely operate a motorcycle," Reamer said.
Reamer and the Indian Motorcycle Group as a group are a non-profit organization which helps fund causes in the Elkhart community.
"I just think it's important to give back and if we can couple that with something that we like to do, our passion for motorcycling, it's just all that much more fun. People loved to help other organizations and help other charities, but they want to be involved where they can have fun. I think that is something we do really good at," he added.
Unlike other popular motorcycle makes Indian is unique, according to Reamer.
"We represent a motorcycle that is the first American motorcycle. The Indian brand came out in 1903 then the Harley Davidson came out. Both are great American motorcycles," he said.
