Man accused of invading Prospect Heights home in outburst over girlfriend

A Chicago man who burst into a Prospect Heights apartment last February and struck an occupant he believed was having an affair with his girlfriend was ordered held on $125,000 bail Wednesday.

Emmanuel Sanchez, 25, was charged with home invasion, a felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Six people - two men and a woman in their early 20s, an 11-year-old child and two toddlers - were at the apartment on the 600 block of Piper Lane about 10:15 a.m. Feb. 11 when Sanchez knocked on the door, said Cook County assistant state's attorney David Mennie.

Mennie offered no information on whether the apartment's occupants knew Sanchez.

Sanchez demanded to be admitted, Mennie said. After the 21-year old male occupant of the apartment refused to open the door, Sanchez pushed on the door with his shoulder and broke in, Mennie said.

Sanchez hit the 21-year-old man with a glass bottle, which shattered and cut the man's head, Mennie said. Sanchez then struck the man in the face with his fist and accused him of having a sexual relationship with Sanchez's girlfriend, Mennie said.

A man and a woman, both 20, who were in a bedroom with their young children at the time of the altercation, witnessed some of the attack, Mennie said. The 20-year-old man put himself between Sanchez and the other man and threatened to call police, and Sanchez fled, according to Mennie.

Prospect Heights police arrested Sanchez Tuesday.

Sanchez, who has misdemeanor convictions for retail theft in 2012 and theft in 2011, next appears in court on May 4.
