Girls water polo: Fremd's win forces first-place tie in MSL West

Fremd's girls water polo team tightened up the Mid-Suburban West race on Wednesday by handing Barrington its first setback in divisional play.

The Vikings (7-9, 4-3) won 12-11, getting 5 goals from Emily Kini, 3 from Lauren Streitmatter and 2 apiece from Paulina Pappas and Meghan Helsdingen.

Barrington (12-2, 6-1) got 4 scores from Andrea Potgieter and 2 each from Heidi Pallan, Courtney Blum and Nicole Runtz.

Conant, meanwhile, earned an 8-4 victory against Schaumburg. That outcome leaves the Cougars (10-4, 6-1) in a tie with Barrington for the West lead.

Aly Wooley (3 goals) and Paulina Chowaniec (2) led the scoring for Conant, and goalie Cam Rosas stopped 21 shots. Schaumburg (10-6, 3-4) was led by 2 goals from Ingrid Hay.

Prospect 8, Rolling Meadows 3: The Knights protected their 2-game lead in the MSL East behind a 4-goal effort by Gracie Dix.

Olivia Thomas scored twice and Mary Clare McAleer made 9 goalie saves for the Knights (14-3, 7-0), who can clinch a spot in the MSL title game with one more East victory in their last three games.

Rolling Meadows (5-11, 2-5) got a pair of goals from Maggie Goodwin.

Hersey 10, Buffalo Grove 6: Karolina Niemiec had a game-best 4 goals to put the Huskies (14-2, 5-2) alone in second place in the MSL East, while Buffalo Grove (8-9, 4-3) slipped into third place.

Elk Grove 8, Wheeling 5: Alyssa Bonilla (3 goals) and Hannah Sallenback (2) helped the visiting Grens (6-7, 3-4) to an MSL East victory.

Talia Kahn had 4 of the goals for Wheeling (4-11, 0-7) and keeper Elizabeth Wargo stopped 12 shots.

Palatine 6, Hoffman Estates 3 (OT): The visiting Pirates scored twice in the first mini-session and once in the second to edge out the Hawks in MSL West action.

Kaley Mockus (2 goals), Natalia Koval (2), Ashley Helminski (1) and Harper Appel (1) accounted for the goals by Palatine (3-16, 2-5), and goalie Meghan Woell made 17 saves.
