Softball: Grant sweeps past Zion-Benton
Grant's softball team stayed hot Saturday, sweeping a nonconference doubleheader from host Zion-Benton by the scores of 11-0 and 18-8.
Megan Chapman pitched the first game and held the Zee-Bees to 4 hits. Calista Warmowski drove in 2 runs on a single, Becca Wold was 2-for-3 and scored twice, Sydney Goessele homered and knocked in 2 runs, and Erin Bengston was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
Grant (9-2) pounded out 21 hits in the second game. Warmowski was 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and scored twice, Sarah Gallivan went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, Bengston finished 3-for-5-with a homer and 5 RBI, and Liz Schram was 4-for-5 with a home run.
The Bulldogs had beaten Huntley on Friday on Wold's walk-off double in the eighth to snap a two-game losing streak.
"The Huntley win was an important game to get us back on track and help us settle down and start wining games again," Grant coach Chris Van Alstine said. "Overall, great end of the week for the team and hopefully the momentum we need heading into playing Lakes on Tuesday."
Antioch goes 2-1: At Stillman Valley, the Sequoits suffered their first loss of the season but also picked up a pair of wins.
Antioch (6-1) started the day with a 7-6 loss to Stillman Valley, which scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Stillman Valley is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. Carlie Gaylord (3 RBI) and Ashley Stephens (double, 2 RBI) each went 3-for-4 for the Sequoits. Annie Wagner was 2-for-4, Jill Foote doubled, and Abby Pyburn walked three times.
Stephanie Bonaguidi (5 innings) and Hannah Cook (2 innings) then threw a combined 5-hit shutout, as the Sequoits blanked DeKalb 7-0. Piper Foote and Avery Malicki homered. Piper Foote (3-for-3) also doubled and singled. Jill Foote was 2-for-4 with a triple, Gaylord had a single and RBI, and Malicki finished 2-for-2.
Piper Foote's grand slam and Malicki's 2-run homer highlighted Antioch's 13-7 win over McHenry. Katie Sorenson was 2-for-2 with 2 walks, while Wagner and Stephens doubled. Cook earned the win, and JV-call-up Ashley Hoerning notched a 3-inning save.
Carmel goes 3-1: At Rockford East, the Corsairs won three games before losing to Marengo 9-2 in the championship game.
Sydney Schuda shut out Rockford East 6-0 and then earned the win again as Carmel edged Marengo 3-2.
Marla Walinski picked up the win as Carmel beat Johnsburg 9-2.
Carmel's 3-1 day improved their overall record to 8-4.
Stevenson goes 2-0: Stevenson swept Schaumburg in nonconference action, 12-11, 22-21, winning both games in the bottom of the seventh.
In the first game, Mic Faunce, Alyssa Pauly and Alana Labaschin each had 3 hits as Labaschin had the game-winning hit.
Vera Pflugradt, Emma Oriatti and Illyssa Muise each added 2 hits.
In the second game, Labaschin went 6-for-6 with a home run and 3 doubles. She drove in 10 runs, including the game-winner.
Pflugradt added 4 hits and drove in 2 runs while Oriatti, Faunce and Pauly had 3 hits apiece.
Pitcher Riley Housinger was the winner in both games.
Richmond Burton 14, Grayslake North 5: Grayslake North left 12 runners on base in the loss.
Faith Standerski, Grace Brown, Jenna Pozezinski and Carissa Popp each had 2 hits for the Knights, who fall to 7-4 on the season.
