Girls water polo: Prospect, Hersey win tournament titles

Prospect's girls water polo team defeated tournament host Maine East 8-3 in the championship game on Saturday to win the six-team gathering.

The Knights topped Bradley-Bourbonnais 8-4 and Palatine 8-1 to earn their spot in the title game.

Buffalo Grove topped Palatine 5-1 for fifth place.

• Hersey won its four-team Shindig Tournament by topping Hoffman Estates 16-2, Resurrection 16-1 and Morton 8-5.

Madison Burkhalter led the Huskies with 4 goals in the victory over Morton.

Hoffman Estates lost to Morton 16-1 but topped Resurrection 14-9 as Abigail Fuscone powered the Hawks with 9 goals.

• Wheeling and first-year coach Jessica Xenakis savored a triumph in Vernon Hills' tournament after topping the hosts 5-2 along with a 12-1 victory over Warren and a 15-5 win against Taft.

Talia Kahn paced the Wildcats against Warren with 3 goals. Meghan Hergert and Katrina Papaioannou both had 2 goals against VH, and Hergert (5) and Kahn (4) led the way against Taft. Goalie Elizabeth Wargo had a total of 25 saves in the three games.

• Lea Cejvan had 3 goals and Olivia Olszewsi had 2 to help Conant in an 8-4 victory over nonconference foe Hinsdale Central in tourney play at Glenbrook South. Cam Rosas had 23 saves and Aly Wooley had 5 steals for the Cougars.

Conant started the day with a 7-4 win over Glenbrook South as Paulina Chowaniec led the way with 5 goals.

The Cougars also dropped a 3-2 decision to Evanston.

• Sidney Rosenblum (3 goals) and Brianna Vasquez and Hannah Trujillo (2 each) led the scoring effort as Schaumburg topped Richards 9-7.

• Fremd topped Niles West 15-10 and beat Maine South 14-2 but dropped a 14-4 decision to Metea Valley, which went unbeaten in the four-team round-robin gathering.

• Maine West topped previously unbeaten Barrington 9-3 on its way to a third-place finish in Deerfield's tournament. The Warriors fell to York 8-2 in the championship game.

Barrington defeated De La Salle 12-7 and Northside 11-4 in its other games Saturday.
