Boys track and field: Prospect edges Barrington for Stokes title
At the varsity level, it was too close to call between the boys track and field teams from Barrington and Prospect on Saturday.
Both teams finished with 140 points to tie for top team honors in the 26th Annual Mike Stokes Relays hosted by Prospect.
But the 27 points scored by Prospect at the frosh-soph level made the difference in the combined scoring format, giving the Knights the victory with 167 points. Barrington (154) was second, just ahead of Wheeling (151).
Prospect was exceptionally strong in the varsity distance relays, winning the 6,400 in 18:50.66, the 3,200 distance medley in 8:45.01, the 4K medley in 11:07.09 and the 3,200 in 8:29.40.
The Knights also counted wins in the 4 x 100 (44.20) and the 1,600 sprint medley (3:43.67) and had the top individual efforts in high jump, triple jump and discus.
Barrington's Ross Bravo won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.22 and placed third in the 300 intermediates. Teammate Kevin Curet was second in the 300 hurdles (42.24) and fourth in the 110s.
The Broncos also got a running relay victory in the 4 x 400 (3:27.48) and had the top individual finish in long jump and shot put.
Barrington took the top team finish in the shot put relay, with Prospect second. The same teams reversed positions in the discus relay scoring.
Wheeling finished with 133 varsity points and was led by junior Lawrence Knish, who won the 300 hurdles (41.69) and took second in the 110s (15.95).
The Wildcats also won the 4 x 200 relay (1:30.36) and had the top team finish in the long jump relay.
