Baseball: Kordek's clutch hit lifts Grayslake Central

Senior Ben Kordek delivered a 2-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning as host Grayslake Central edged Vernon Hills 3-2 on Friday in a nonconference baseball matchup.

Pinch hitter Tony Neuman led off the the bottom of the 6th inning with a sharp single to left field. Justin Shepley re-entered the game to run and advanced to second base on a Coby Moe sacrifice bunt. Another pinch hitter Bryce Gniadek lined out to right setting up Kordek for the double.

Sophomore Eric Sturm picked up his first career varsity win as he tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs while striking out three batters.

Shepley started on the mound and tossed the first three innings allowing 1 unearned run while registering 5 strikeouts. Junior Ray Bradley followed Shepley and tossed two innings allowing 1 run and striking out 2. All together, the trio of Rams pitchers fanned 10 and allowed only 3 hits.

Grayslake Central is now 6-1 on the season.

Carmel 11, Rockford Jefferson 1: Lukas Galdoni went 3-for-3 and drove in 2 runs to help Carmel get a decisive win.

Galdoni had 2 doubles. Drew Wiegman added 2 hits and drove in 3 runs for winning pitcher Eddie Pietschmann.

Wiegman also had 2 stolen bases.

Grant 16, Round Lake 3 (5): Grant was up 16-3 through three innings.

Winning pitcher Nick Malmberg went four innings to get his first win of the season for Grant (4-5).

Chris Nesterowicz led the Grant offense with a double and 2 RBI.

Antioch 11, Wauconda 8: Antioch was up 10-0 after two innings.

Patrick Day had a big day for the Sequoits with 3 hits, including a home run. He drove in 5 runs.

Tom Boeh also homered for Antioch.

For Wauconda, Alex Machon hit a home run while Trevor Sefcik, John Herbst, Dan Sperling and Tyler Husko each had 2 hits.

Mundelein 10, Zion-Benton 0: Mundelein moved to 10-0 on the season by rolling up 12 hits on the game.

The Mustangs were led by Brendan Murphy and Drew Breitenreiter who each had 2 hits.

Murphy had a 2-run triple in his total.

Jeff Morton added a home run for Mundelein and Brett Parola doubled.

Jack Dahlinger had a 2-RBI walk-off single to end the game.

Winning pitcher Zack Zentz had 6 strikeouts in four innings.
