Man charged in 2007 killing, sexual assaults from 2002, 2010

CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County prosecutors say the 2012 arrest of a shoplifting suspect led to the Chicago man being charged in the 2007 death of woman and two sexual assaults.

Authorities say 35-year-old Antonio Smith is charged with murder in the death of 47-year-old Shirley Regina Morgan of Chicago. Smith was ordered held without bail in a hearing Friday.

Smith also is charged in the February 2002 sexual assault of a 33-year-old woman. He also sexually assaulted a woman in August 2010 after beating her with his fists and choking her.

Smith was arrested March 24, 2012 in a retail theft from a South Side Chicago department store. His DNA was taken and tested in 2012 and was matched to the killing and sexual assaults. Authorities didn't say why it took until 2017 to charge him.

It isn't known if Smith has retained a lawyer.
