Already paying price of climate change
Gravity and Climate Change exist, whether humans believe in them or not. As Representative Bill Foster aptly pointed out in his Op-Ed April 3, there is very little uncertainty in the scientific findings regarding both. Climate Change has many factors that contribute to it, just like flying an airplane. Yet humans are still boarding airplanes and trusting that they will end up in the destination they have chosen. People believe in the science of flying, even though there are tiny scientific uncertainties about gravity.
We are already paying for Climate Change damage caused by increasing drought and more severe storms. For example, when a hurricane hits, the cost of drywall increases everywhere because of higher demand.
No individual gets a bill for their share of the costs of Climate Change. Yet we each pay those prices in large and small costs for various goods and services.
I recently heard about a promising proposal for a Carbon Tax and Dividend program, citizensclimatelobby.org/carbon-fee-and-dividend/, that would work through supply and demand market forces. It would gradually discourage the use of fossil fuels and encourage goods and services produced using energy sources that do not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Let's work together to get off the Climate Change flight and choose a new destination.
