Elmhurst police investigate attempted carjacking inside woman's garage

Elmhurst police are searching for a man who attempted to carjack a woman's vehicle inside her garage Wednesday morning.

The woman told investigators she had just parked her car on the 900 block of South Mitchell Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. when a man holding a handgun walked into her garage, police said.

The man, described as a 6-foot-tall black man with a slim build wearing a gray sweatshirt and black face mask, approached the driver's side of the car pointing the gun at the woman. The woman shifted the car into reverse and quickly backed out of the garage, nearly striking the man.

The man ran to a four-door sedan, possibly a Ford Fusion, with tinted windows parked nearby, police said. The vehicle traveled north on Mitchell Avenue toward Harrison Street.

The woman told investigators she may have been followed from a grocery store at York Street and Butterfield Road.

Police are investigating whether the crime is related to a similar situation a short time later in Westchester.

Anyone with information about the attempted carjacking is asked to contact Elmhurst police at (630) 530-3050.
