Memory Café offers critical socialization for those with cognitive issues

Staying socially engaged is critical as adults age but it's especially important for those with memory-related issues and that's where the Barrington Area Council on Aging's Memory Café can help.

"Although socialization is critical as we age, when older adults begin to show signs of cognitive impairment, many begin to isolate and sever social connections," said Bonnie Scherkenbach, a social service coordinator with BACOA. "Memory Café engages people with cognitive issues at a time that's critical and improves quality of life."

Memory Café also involves care partners who can develop a new and profound relationship with their loved one.

"Memory loss is something an entire family struggles with," said Scherkenbach. "But care partners might really be struggling with the change their loved one is experiencing. We help them learn how to embrace their loved one for who they are today."

Memory Café is held every third Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon. The program is free but registration is required. The next session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 19.

Memory Café activities can include everything from art and crafts to message and pet therapy.

To register, call (847) 381-5030.
