Waubonsee college 'active shooter' emergency was not real

Waubonsee Community College students were inadvertently alarmed Tuesday when police showed up looking for an active shooter on the Sugar Grove campus.

It turns out, however, that no such thing was happening.

The college, participating in an emergency management training course, inadvertently sent a message to a 911 dispatch center.

"We are very grateful to the local agencies who responded so quickly and to the members of the Waubonsee community who followed the college's safety protocols," the college posted in a message on its home page late Tuesday afternoon.

All evening classes are being held as scheduled, the college said.
