Girls soccer: Strong second half lifts Antioch

Antioch 2, Marian Central 1: Coming out of a scoreless halftime, Antioch out-did Marian Central in the second half to get the win.

Tessa Furlong scored for the Sequoits off a penalty kick and Rachel Moore scored off an assist by Ella Roberts.

"We played great team soccer and worked hard for each other," Antioch coach Matt Bohmann said.

Antioch, which got 7 saves from goalie Monica Wilhelm, moves to 2-1 on the season.

Vernon Hills 3, Lakes 3: Vernon Hills was up 3-1 at halftime but settled for a tie after giving up 2 second-half goals to Lakes.

"I thought we played well for 40 minutes today. I give our kids a lot of credit with having spring break last week and playing a match the first day back in these (rainy) conditions," Vernon Hills coach Michael McCaulou said. "I was happy with how we responded after conceding the first goal of the game. We pressed after we went down a goal and were able to find the net three times in the first half.

"The conditions made for a very open game and Lakes took advantage of it in the second. I felt the game could have gone either way. Both teams fought hard."

Aleen Lim had 2 goals for Vernon Hills and Julia Neary scored the other.

Goalie Emma Pappano had 6 saves for Antioch.

For Lakes, Bella Pighini had 2 goals and Jackie Pettigrew also scored.

Goalies Payton Landy and Molly Balkrins each had 5 saves.

Grant 1, Mundelein 1: At Grant, Mundelein and Grant settled for a tie.

Both teams scored in the second half.

For Grant, Melissa Valdovinos scored a goal off of an assist by Grace Bujan.

Grant goalie Lexi Werve had 12 saves.

Grayslake Central 9, McHenry 0: Grayslake Central got a decisive win thanks to 3 goals by Hannah Kolb and 2 goals from Joslynn Smith.

Smith also had an assist.

Meanwhile, Madeline Mussay had a goal and 2 assists and Maura Fitzgerald finished with a goal and an assist.

Goalkeeper Katie Pearson had 4 saves for the Rams, who were up 6-0 at halftime.
