Geneva a well-managed community
I've heard from some people that Kevin Burns has no support among members of Geneva's City Council. Not true; I support him.
We should not interpret the neutrality of others as an indication of displeasure with the job Kevin has done as mayor. Neutrality is nothing more than a desire for elected officials to refrain from taking political positions. I can't recall such politicking in the 20 years I've lived in Geneva.
Although they may not take a position for or against an individual, other members of the Council have taken positions on the issues. They feel as I do that Geneva is a well run municipal organization; our decisions are grounded in planning and foresight; our staff is experienced and skilled; and our elected officials are passionate and accessible.
Together we have weathered the storm of the Great Recession, coming through with a strong financial position reported in quantitative financial statements that have been reviewed by independent auditors. Evidence of the strength of the city's overall stewardship is the broad recognition Geneva has as an attractive place to live and do business. One factor for this success is the level of involvement that Kevin actively encourages from all stakeholders.
A popular phrase in this election is that government should be run like a business. Well managed businesses have several things in common:
• They have a clearly defined mission and goals and commitment to ethical standards
• They have well trained and empowered staff
• They have sound management oversight of operations and sound board oversight of management
• They balance their investments in human and physical assets
These attributes apply to the City of Geneva. It is a well managed organization due in no small part to the leadership of Kevin Burns.
