LHS Academic Decathlon Team competes at state
The Libertyville High School Academic Decathlon Team finished seventh out of 40 teams in the Academic Decathlon State Competition held March 11 at Northeastern Illinois University.
Team members are Stephen Richardson, Alex Hecksher-Gomes, Sarah Leonard, Jennifer Graham, Griffin Ferrell, Cody Brown, Corban Chang, and Mynn Tan. The team is coached by physics teacher Mark Buesing.
Individual medal winners were:
• Sarah Leonard: First in Art
• Carl Michelotti: First in Art and third in Literature
• Cody Brown: First in Interview and third in Art
• Stephen Richardson: Third in Art
• Mynn Tan: Third in Literature
• Jennifer Graham: Third in Literature
• Corban Chang: Second in Literature
• Griffin Ferrell: Third in Math
• Alex Hecksher-Gomes was the highest scoring student from Libertyville.
Perennial favorite Whitney Young Magnet School in Chicago won the competition. Libertyville has placed in the top 10 at state every year since 2000.
In Academic Decathlon, every student competes in all 10 academic disciplines: Essay, Art, Speech, Math, Interview, Economics, Language & Literature, Music, and Science. Students compete in three different categories based on GPA. All topics centered around the 2017 theme of World War II.
