Jury convicts Chicago-area man in girlfriend's killing

AURORA, Ill. (AP) - Jurors have convicted a 48-year-old suburban Chicago man for fatally shooting his 22-year-old girlfriend three years ago when she tried to break off their relationship.

The Kane County state's attorney's office says jurors deliberated for two hours Monday before returning with a guilty verdict against Christopher M. Whetstone in Rachel Taylor's death.

Prosecutors say Taylor had driven to Whetstone's Aurora home to let him see their two children and he shot her in the chest. He chased her as she ran away screaming and shot her twice more in the abdomen.

Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement the tragedy was amplified because two children will now grow up without their parents.

Whetstone faces a maximum life prison term. No sentencing date was set.
