Evanston man admits to Elgin burglary

An Evanston man admitted Tuesday that he climbed through the window of an Elgin home last September and stole a large TV and bicycle from the homeowner.

Deandre Baker was sentenced to four years in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to residential burglary. Cook County Judge Marc Martin recommended the 21-year-old be placed in the Illinois Department of Corrections impact incarceration program, also known as boot camp. Candidates must be approved for admission into boot camp, which consists of military-style training, substance abuse counseling, life skills training and education.

Prosecutors say Baker opened a window to the Elgin home at about 4 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 13 after placing several calls to the home to determine the homeowner was away.

Baker then let three unidentified men into the home through the front door, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Denise Loiterstein said. The men took several items, including a large TV and a bike, which Loiterstein said was recovered in a dumpster.

The burglary was caught on video surveillance.

Baker, who received credit for 126 days in custody, was also ordered to pay $709 in fines.
