Sculptures sought for display at Geneva Commons

Local artists have a chance to have one of their own 3-D creations on display in Geneva Commons along the Randall Road corridor, bringing wide exposure to their artwork while adding culture to the mall.

The mall is hosting a search for two permanent sculptures that will be on display at the outdoor shopping center in Geneva.

The deadline for artists to submit their proposals for the public artwork is April 1.

The artwork selected will be a part of a new gathering area at Geneva Commons.

Contest organizers are asking Chicago-area artists to design something that will reflect and pay tribute to the natural and or cultural essence of the surrounding areas, such as the Fox Valley and Kane County.

The chosen artists will receive $15,000 to create their piece, according to the guidelines from the mall.

Once created, the sculptures will sit on top of a concrete base for all to see.

One of the bases for the sculpture will be 8-feet-by-8 feet, and the other will be 6-feet-by-6-feet.

Organizers are asking for the artwork to be three-dimensional, interactive, and made of metal, stone or other durable material.

As the artwork will be outside in all Chicago's seasons, it must be designed to hold up to the elements.

If you have an idea in mind for your creation, you must submit it to the mall by April 1, at artsubmissions@dodier.com.

The contest is open to artists, age 18 or older living and or working in the Chicago metropolitan area. Organizers are asking that the artists have project experience, and can show samples of other work.

The application also should include a statement of interest, a resume, up to five examples of previous works, a rendering of the proposed work, a written summary telling selectors what exactly will be on display at the mall, and how that artwork will fit with the theme.

The contest opened Feb. 15. After the application deadline closes on April 1, there will be an internal review of the applications around April 10, and selections will be made.

The artists will know if they've been chosen by April 20.

The artwork is expected to be installed and unveiled sometime in June.
