Girls water polo: Prospect powers past Hersey
Prospect's girls water polo team passed a key early test on Monday, getting an 8-2 win against Hersey in a Mid-Suburban East opener.
The defending divisional champs got 4 goals from senior Gracie Dix and managed to shake off the Huskies by shutting them out in the third and fourth quarters.
“I thought we did a good job of sticking with them in the first half,” said Hersey coach Megan Brownley.
Toward the end of that first half, Hersey got goals from Andie Dougherty and junior standout Katie Lindgren. But Prospect limited turnovers in the second half and gave up few quality scoring chances the rest of the way.
Hersey goalie Emily VanGrinsven and Prospect goalie Mary Clare McAleer also played big roles in the keeping the scoring low.
The Knights, who also got goals from Colleen Doyle, Natalia Dmitruk, Emma Colehour and Ann Fulk, have a senior-heavy team that seems eager for the opportunity to make some history.
“They've really owned it in the sense that they understand what they want to achieve, and they've also taken the steps you need to take in order to be successful,” said Prospect coach Natalie Tucker.
