Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?I am running for re-election because in the time I have served on the board I have seen the district make great strides towards insuring student success. I remain as excited and dedicated to seeing students succeed to their fullest potential as I did on the day when I was first elected. What do you think about the process for measuring student success in your district? Is it adequate? What changes, if any, do you propose? The state has a standardized test which we have to administer to our students. About the time that we are able to utilize the results to evaluate the needs of our students, the state changes the test. In District 54 we have our own measurement tools, which enable us to evaluate student achievement gains throughout the year. How big a role do you think the board of education should play in setting the curriculum for students and what ideas do you have for changes to the current curriculum? The role of the Board of Ed is to hire the best possible Superintendent, who has the responsibility with staff to develop the curriculum. The curriculum is under constant review and changes are made where and when neededWhat budget issues will your district have to confront and what measures do you support to address them? If you believe cuts are necessary, what programs and expenses should be reduced or eliminated? On the income side, do you support any tax or fee increases?Budget issues are a function of actions taken by the government. We never know what level of funding will be provided by either the State or Federal governments. For example we do not know what will be the outcome of the pension funding crisis, will there be a property tax freeze and will they further cut transportation funding. District 54 has always been fiscally responsible. For example we have looked for ways to reduce costs outside of the classroom by freezing supply budgets rather than impacting student programming. At this time I see no reason for tax or fee increases. What role can and should school choice play in your district? If Congress or the state approves a voucher system or other means giving students broader choices among public and private schools, how will that affect your district? What is the appropriate response for the board of education of a public school system?District 54 currently has schools of choice in place. Parents may elect to have their students attend one of our open enrollment schools. Vouchers are detrimental to public education because they take critical funds away from our must needy students. We have met the needs of the community by offering them choice within the district. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office? How and when is the pension funding crisis going to be fixed? Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Scott M. Kegarise Schaumburg Township Highway CommissionerWhat is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?I come from a large family so having so many brothers and sisters, the biggest lesson I learned was how to get along with people. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I have no regrets. I've been very fortunate to live a good life! What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?Math I'm able to keep a balanced budget. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Treat people the way you want to be treated.
