An Elk Grove Village letter to the editor: When I think of the direction President Trump is taking this country, it is frightening.

When I think of the direction President Trump is taking this country, it is frightening. This man wants the American public to accept whatever he says as the truth. If anyone dares to question him, Trump insults, demeans, or labels them as liars. He calls any story he disagrees with, "fake news." He is trying to block the mainstream media from reporting on what is actually happening with his administration.

Our country was founded on the premise of a free press primarily so that the public could not be brainwashed with propaganda. Just look at North Korea - nothing gets out to the public unless it is released through the government. Do we really want to emulate that country?

President Trump is gutting our environmental protections. He is gagging and hamstringing scientific research. He wants to set back women's rights to the 19th century, not to mention what he is doing to protections in place for the LGBTQ community. His blatant bias against Muslims is only fueling hate in our country. The only portion of our society that will benefit from his actions will be big business.

The Republican Party is in charge in the House and Senate. They have the power to block Mr. Trump's damaging actions, but they do nothing or worse, encourage him.

My only hope is that Congress will not be as short-sighted as Mr. Trump; that they will wake up, have the guts to start acting rationally and not allow this obviously ill-prepared man to destroy what this country stands for. If not, then I don't even want to think about what it will mean to our children and grandchildren.
