Hundreds gather for unity rally One Race Human in Skokie
Saturday, March 4 at 12:30 PM - 2:30 PM Skokie Cultural Community Coalition hosted a huge unity rally about one race Human at Devonshire Cultural Center 4400 Greenwood St, Skokie, Illinois 60076. More than 250 people at the Devonshire Cultural Center people from all ethnic backgrounds and listened to one another and shared their own experiences about race.
The purpose of the event was to engage in relationship building by participating in a social and cultural to continue building a positive community.
The topic of the day was one race Human. The program included speeches of legal experts, public officials, and State Congressional leader, and community and faith leaders.
Erika Garcia was the masters of the program. She said in opening remarks Skokie did lots of things for us, we all belong to one community.
The speakers of the event were Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen, Mark A. Collins from Niles Township Government, Skokie Board of Park Commissioners Michael Reid, Anne Shaw from Shaw Legal Services, State Rep. Lou Lang, Rosamin Bhanpuri from Niles Township High School District, Ted Smukler from Open Communities and other.
Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen was a keynote speaker said "The Skokie is a mix of identities. Skokie village is a town of many Race, Ethnicity and Language. We have 90 different counties represent and 50 languages spoken in our Skokie. Village of Skokie that today is a culturally diverse and economically progressive community. The Village Board approved a resolution making Skokie the first municipality in the state to support Illinois House Bill. Our village's actions are about human rights.
State Rep. Lou Lang said Skokie is a more diverse community in Illinois and I am proud of this community. Skokie has been a welcoming town to ethnically diverse residents. I'm really proud that our village and our community. We can't change the people around us but we can change people who are representing us. If anyone need help my office is open for everyone. I introduce some solutions to house of representative in Springfield, Illinois to speak out for peace and justice.
Civil right attorney Anne Shaw highlighted the hate crime is a sky rocket in Chicago after the election result. But good this is happen, I saw a lot of unity we can see every event. This room is packed.
Several other speakers at the event said "Skokie is our Town, all of our community. We have the opportunity to stand against anything that we may see that does not represent who we are and what we are as a whole. We represent quite a few different cultures and backgrounds, but we are all one race, the human race."
