Schaumburg, Conant, Fremd win season openers

Matt Soltau and Parker Koress scored 4 goals apiece and Soltau came up with a team-best 7 steals as Schaumburg got its boys water polo season going with a 19-3 victory over Rolling Meadows on Wednesday.

Joseph Kula stopped 9 shots in goals for the Saxons.

Conant 9, Buffalo Grove 8 (OT): Alex Hirjoi had 3 goals and visiting Conant came up with 5 fourth-quarter goals before outscoring the Bison 2-1 in the extra sessions to gain a victory in their season opener.

Nick Roberts, Kacper Aniecko and Kevin Carr had 2 goals apiece for Buffalo Grove (1-1).

Fremd 13, Elk Grove 4: Tarun Pothanker had 5 goals and Derek Warnstedt scored 4 to help the defending MSL champion Vikings win their season opener on the road.

Hersey 12, Hoffman Estates 0: Junior RJ Quinn scored a team-high 3 goals as the host Huskies jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first quarter to get their first win of the season. Alex Thielen earned the shutout in goal for Hersey with 7 saves.

Palatine 18, Prospect 13: In the matchup of coaching Grzybeks, big brother Joe won bragging rights.

Palatine got 9 goals for TJ May, 4 from Glenn Ingebrigtson and 2 from Sean O'Brien in winning its first game of the season.

High scorer for host Prospect, playing its season opener under coach Steve Grzybek, was Dan Macina with 6 goals.

De La Salle 8, St. Viator 7: Senior goalie Tim Bansfield stopped 11 shots, but the Lions came up short in nonconference action. Stephen Battin, Jack Curran and Tyler Couple each scored twice for St. Viator, and Matt Frank had 1 goal.
