Geneva High School girls basketball team welcomed back to school as state champs

Students, parents and administrators packed the hallways and commons area Monday morning at Geneva High School to honor their state-champion girls basketball team.

Preceded by the GHS band and with the school fight song echoing off the walls, the team paraded the hardware from their playoff journey, which started with a regional victory over York High School and culminated in a state final win over previously undefeated Edwardsville High School.

The Vikings won both weekend games by 1 point on last-second shots, first beating Fremd in the semifinals before besting Edwardsville.

"One of the best experiences ever," coach Sarah Meadows said Sunday of the team's run to a championship.

It is the school's first girls basketball state title.
