District 41 ballot issue needs support

As a parent and former owner of an early learning center, I am mindful of Glen Ellyn Elementary District 41's needs to provide for the care and maintenance of buildings, ADA accessibility, secure and safe environments, and the need to eliminate portables so students can be united under one roof.

Clearly, efforts to repair leaking roofs, add additional handicap accessible restrooms, and a secure and safe entrance at Churchill are examples of appropriate improvement expenditures for a district that is recognized for its excellence.

I am also keenly aware that much of what supports our tax base is the village's attractiveness to households seeking to raise a family. In communities such as ours, municipal budgets are inextricably linked to property values. While we recognize that it is important to keep control of tax increases by guarding against unnecessary and frivolous expenditures, we also understand that it is essential to not neglect those elements of the community that are the underpinnings of its character and identity. The schools represent a very large part of whom and what we are in Glen Ellyn.

Of 32 portable classrooms installed districtwide in 2001, 10 remain at Hadley Junior High. Also, it has been determined that specific facility life safety needs be completed within a five-year time period.

The proposed bond referendum monies are slated for much needed life safety issues, ADA compliance and portables removal.

This is an ideal time to consider addressing the district's outstanding facility needs because past bonds, used for previous building projects, are due to expire and interest rates are still at historic lows. Additionally, with the new $24.2 million bond being lower than the current expiring bonds, residents will see a decrease in District 41 taxes.

I'm asking that people vote yes April 4 for our children and our community.
