Fundraiser for Stevenson student diagnosed with leukemia

Stevenson High School students and community members will gather Thursday, March 9, at Culver's, 450 McHenry Road in Buffalo Grove, to support freshman Matthew Abrams, who recently underwent a lifesaving stem-cell transplant today after being diagnosed with leukemia in the fall.

The restaurant will donate 20 percent of the sales it makes between 3 and 8 p.m. that day to Abrams' family to help pay his medical bills.

The fundraiser, named "The Stevenson Jazz Lab Band's Music for Matthew," will feature several Stevenson jazz bands performing throughout the evening and students serving dinner to guests dining inside the restaurant and at the drive through.

In addition, officials with Be the Match will be on site to register guests into the National Marrow Donor Program, a nonprofit organization that's dedicated to creating an opportunity for all patients to receive the marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant they need, when they need it.

A GoFundMe page "Matthew's Mission" has been created to tell Matthew's story, update his health and for visitors to make donations.
