When did environment become a political issue?
The EPA was created under President Nixon with bi-partisan support. Now the new Administrator is an anti-science, anti-environment, corporate shill who wants to cut regulations, reduce staff and turn responsibility for environmental enforcement to the states.
The problem with so called federalism is that it will not work. States are facing their own budgetary problems and many do not have the political will or courage to stand up to corporate polluters. Further, pollution whether in air or water does not respect state borders which is why national standards and regulations are needed. In addition, regulations often force the development of new technology which in turn creates jobs.
Our air and water quality has greatly improved since the creation of EPA in 1970. We need to continue to take steps to protect our planet from constantly emerging threats. We all must protest the gutting of the primary agency whose mission is protection of the environment we all share.
