Mayor's timing was bad
After reading your recent article regarding Steve Lentz's 2015 speech and the mayoral candidates. I was wondering why Mayor Lentz should be apologizing. After listening to the speech, I thought that Lentz was addressing the parents and children of the town. He was speaking to the youth of the community and talking about making smart decisions in life.
I thought that this speech was criticized so much because of timing. He decided to speak about a controversial topic in the heat of the Supreme Court decision, which was possibly uncalled for and unneeded.
I found this similar to Meryl Streep. She spoke out at the Golden Globes about Donald Trump's actions during his campaign. She made strong, provocative points like Mayor Lentz but the timing was all off. An event like the Golden Globes is a night to smile, nod and laugh, not a night to bring up controversial actions of a politician. In both cases the opposing political parties bashed on what Lentz and Streep said causing fighting and separation of our people. Both events at which these speeches were made were supposed to unite the people not divide them. Timing is everything. Considering what is going on in our society can impact whether or not your speech is effective and beneficial.
