Exempt athletes from P.E. requirement

I read Mr. Lazzarotto's comments in the February 18, 2017 regarding the P.E. requirement at schools.

I disagree with portions of his comments regarding P.E. requirements for high school students. Yes, I agree that P.E. should be required, but for those students that are not student athletes.

My school district is 211, and P.E. is required. These students are athletes six days a week.

On a practice day, they stay two hours longer at school, and on school day meets/games, they can come home as late as 8:30, and they haven't eaten or showered yet. So homework is not even being started till after 9 p.m.

And on Saturday, depending on the sport, they may not come home until close to 4 p.m.

Why can't these students be given a choice?

Why can't the choice be either P.E. or required study hall, but only while you are a student athlete?

I know my kids would have loved to have a little more time during the school day to get a jump on homework.
