Naperville cops: Tuxedo-clad man's crime story was a hoax

Naperville police say a tuxedo-clad man was pulling a prank earlier this month when he slipped a note to a gas station clerk indicating he was the victim of a crime.

The incident began about 3 a.m. on Feb. 12 when the man entered the BP station at 901 N. Washington St. and bought a pack of cigarettes. On the back of the receipt, he wrote a note saying someone had stolen his wallet and "they" had a gun.

He then left in a black SUV.

Police on Friday said they found the man this week and met with him on Thursday. They now believe the entire incident was a hoax.

"We don't feel he was the victim of an abduction or anything like that," Naperville Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said. "But he's fine and safe, and there's no issue."

Police were able to find the man using tips they received after posting photos of him and the SUV on social media.

The man, who police aren't identifying, isn't expected to face charges.
