Roskam, Hultgren applaud Michael Flynn's resignation

Two Republican congressmen from the suburbs have waded into the furor over former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's resignation.

Reps. Peter Roskam of Wheaton and Randy Hultgren of Plano both applauded Flynn's exit Monday, although neither specifically called for an investigation of his calls to the Russian ambassador before President Donald Trump took office.

"I was extremely disturbed by the actions of National Security Adviser Flynn - he had to go," Hultgren said in a statement Thursday.

Roskam stated that "I'm deeply troubled to learn former National Security Adviser Flynn misled the vice president. He was fired - and deservedly so."

A retired lieutenant general, Flynn resigned and apologized to Vice President Mike Pence for giving incomplete information about communications with the Russian ambassador regarding U.S. sanctions. Those recorded conversations leaked to the media are causing concern over whether Flynn violated rules about negotiating with foreign governments while President Barack Obama was still in office.

"I remain very concerned over accusations of Russian involvement and interference in American affairs," Hultgren said. "I will be actively working with my colleagues in Congress to look into this matter thoroughly."

Roskam noted that "Russian attempts to infiltrate and undermine democratic institutions across the western world are of grave concern to me. In the coming days and weeks I will be looking into this matter more closely."

Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan has not called for an investigation of the Flynn scandal, but many Illinois Democrats have, including Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin and suburban Reps. Raj Krishnamoorthy, Jan Schakowsky and Mike Quigley.
