Officer's rifle shot killed Shelbyville man during exchange

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Indiana State Police say a round from the rifle of a Shelbyville police officer killed a 64-year-old man in an exchange of gunfire between the two.

Police said Thursday that preliminary autopsy results indicate the bullet that struck Steven C. Oliger of Shelbyville was a .223 caliber rifle round fired by the officer. The officer's name hasn't been released.

Police say Oliger suffered a gunshot wound to the head during the exchange Tuesday night outside his home about 20 miles southeast of Indianapolis. Oliger was armed with a revolver.

Officers went to the home following a report of shots fired there. Police say Oliger fired one shot from a deck and one officer returned fire.
