Police: Gunman dies after being shot at by Indiana officer

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Police say a 64-year-old man has died after he fired shots from a revolver and an officer shot at him outside a home in central Indiana.

State police say in a statement that the investigation into Tuesday night's death of Steven C. Oliger in Shelbyville is in the early stages. They note, however, that it wasn't immediately clear whether the shot fired by the Shelbyville police officer hit Oliger.

Police say Oliger had a gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy expected Wednesday will determine cause of death.

Officers had responded shortly after 10:30 p.m. following a report of shots fired in the home. Police say two officers saw Oliger on a deck before Oliger fired a shot and one of the officers shot at him with a rifle.
