Fort Wayne officer's use of deadly force ruled justified
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - A Fort Wayne police officer who fatally shot a knife-wielding man more than three months ago won't be charged in the incident.
The Allen County prosecutor's office ruled Thursday that the officer was justified in using deadly force against 62-year-old Charles E. Antrup in October.
The prosecutor's statement says Antrup told the officer he was going to kill someone and refused to put the knife down after several requests from the officer to do so.
The man was shot in the head and fell while still holding the knife. The officer kicked the knife away and attempted to administer first aid.
The man was pronounced dead after emergency service personnel arrived. An autopsy found Antrup's blood-alcohol level had been about two and a half times the legal limit.
