Chicago Cubs make it official with Anderson

The Chicago Cubs on Thursday made the official announcement that they have signed left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson to a one-year contract for 2017.

The Cubs and Anderson agreed to the deal earlier this week, pending a physical exam.

Anderson will get a base salary of $3.5 million with incentives that can make the deal worth up to $10 million, according to sources.

Last season with the Dodgers, Anderson made $15.88 million after accepting the team's qualifying offer following the 2015 season.

He underwent back surgery last March for a bulging disc and was limited to 4 games (3 starts) last season. He went 1-2 with an 11.91 ERA.

Anderson, who turns 29 on Feb. 1, is 38-43 3.86 ERA and a WHIP of 1.32 for his career, which began in 2009 with Oakland. He pitched for the Athletics through 2013 before being traded to Colorado and pitching for the Rockies one season.

Anderson is expected to battle for the final spot in the Cubs' rotation along with fellow lefty Mike Montgomery.

But manager Joe Maddon figures to employ a six-man rotation at times during the season, as he did last year, so both Montgomery and Anderson should see significant starting time.
