COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Brionna Jones tied the Maryland school record with 42 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the third-ranked Terrapins beat Penn State 89-83 Wednesday night.
Jones went 15 for 19 from the field and sank 12 of 14 free throws to match the school's previous single-game high, set by Marissa Coleman against Vanderbilt on March 29, 2009.
Jones previous career best scoring effort was 30 points against St. Peter's on Dec. 16. The broad shouldered, 6-foot-3 senior also became the fifth player in school history to reach the 1,000-rebound mark.
Nearly all of Jones' baskets were layups, many of them put-backs. She tied the record - but missed a chance to break it - by sinking one of two free throws with 23.9 seconds left.
Down 37-34 late in the first half, Maryland bounced back to remain the lone unbeaten team in Big Ten play. The Terrapins (16-1, 4-0) have won four straight, each by double digits, since falling to top-ranked UConn.
Teniya Page scored 27 for Penn State (11-6, 1-4) and Amari Carter had 22.
No. 2 BAYLOR 77, TCU 54
WACO, Texas (AP) - Freshman Lauren Cox made her first seven shots and scored 19 points as Baylor won its 51st consecutive home game, beating TCU.
Alexis Jones added 14 points and Alexis Prince 10 for the Lady Bears (16-1, 5-0 Big 12), who had their smallest margin in a conference game so far but trailed for only a 12-second span after TCU made a 3-pointer for its first basket of the game.
TCU (8-8, 0-5) has lost 21 in a row since 1991 against the Lady Bears, including 0-9 mark in the five seasons the Frogs have been in the Big 12.
AJ Alix led TCU with 17 points, while Jada Butts had 15.
No. 14 MIAMI 82, No. 15 VIRGINIA TECH 75
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Adrienne Motley scored 18 points, Jessica Thomas had 17 and No. 14 Miami used a 17-7 run in the fourth quarter to hand No. 15 Virginia Tech its first loss of the season 82-75 on Wednesday night.
Emese Hof added 14 points, Laura Cornelius 13 and Sarah Mortensen 10 as the three reserves helped the Hurricanes (14-3, 3-2 ACC) to a 39-2 advantage in bench points. That was critical as the Hokies (15-1, 2-1) basically used seven players with two fouling and two more finishing with four fouls.
Hill led Virginia Tech, which was off to its second-best start behind the 1998-99 team that went 18-0, with a career-best 23 points.
TEXAS TECH 75, No. 18 WEST VIRGINA 66
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Recee' Caldwell scored 21 points and Texas Tech had a 17-point lead erased in the fourth quarter but recovered with a 10-2 run to close out a upset win over West Virginia.
Ivonne Cook-Taylor added 17 points and Arella Guirantes scored 14. The Red Raiders (11-5, 3-2 Big 12) led 56-39 with 9:41 left before the Mountaineers (14-3, 2-3) scored 10 straight and later tied it at 60-all with 3:02 left.
But Texas Tech never let West Virginia take the lead.
No. 22 OKLAHOMA 67, IOWA STATE 56
AMES, Iowa (AP) - Vionise Pierre-Louis had 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds and No. 22 Oklahoma held off Iowa State.
Iowa State pulled within 57-55 on a jumper by Seanna Johnson with 4:49 to play but from there the Cyclones missed their last four shots and had four turnovers. The Sooners (13-4, 4-1 Big 12) didn't run away and two free throws by Johnson with 2:55 left cut the deficit to 61-57. Maddie Manning had a quick layup and Pierre-Louis made two free throws with 2:02 to play but the only other points were two Manning free throws at 58 seconds.
Bridget Carleton had 15 points and Johnson 14 for the Cyclones (10-6, 1-4).
No. 25 KANSAS STATE 73, KANSAS 60
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Breanna Lewis had her second-consecutive double-double, Karyla Middlebrook finished with 11 points, six rebounds and seven assists and Kansas State beat Kansas.
Lewis scored 15 points, on 7-of-11 shooting, and grabbed 10 rebounds while Kindred Wesemann added 12 points for the Wildcats.
Lewis had seven points during a 16-0 run, capped by her 3-point play, to open the game and Kansas State (13-4, 3-2 Big 12) never trailed.
Jessica Washington hit back-to-back 3s to pull the Jayhawks within nine with 4:11 left in the second quarter and a 3-pointer by Kylee Kopatich trimmed the Kansas (6-10, 0-5) deficit to 33-26 at the break. But the Wildcats scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to make it 45-26 and led by double figures the rest of the way.
