Kids create crafts from around the world

Around 100 children and adults alike took part in the Bartlett Library's "Crafts from Around the World" program on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Those in attendance made various crafts representing Asia, South America, Europe and the Arctic regions.

For Asia, patrons were able to make two crafts: a paper uchiwa fan from Japan and a paper Chinese dragon. The uchiwa fan was a blank piece of cutout paper glued to a thick, flat, wooden stick.

The patrons decorated the fan with markers, creating any image they wanted. The Chinese dragon was on paper that they needed to cut out with scissors and color whichever way they wished. Once all the pieces were glued together, a Popsicle stick was attached at each end of the dragon, allowing children to hold onto the sticks and wave the dragon around.

Patrons could also make a turtle for South America, which was comprised of a paper plate, dot paint and construction paper cutouts for the head and legs. The head and legs were glued onto the paper plate, and then the patrons used dot paint to decorate the turtle's shell (plate).

Also available was the option of making the Eiffel Tower out of cut up straws. On a piece of paper was a drawing of the Eiffel Tower to use as a guide to where the straws were glued to, and behind the picture read "Bonjour!"

Lastly, for the Arctic regions, patrons made an igloo scene using cotton balls and cupcake wrappers. The cotton balls acted as falling snowflakes on a piece of blue construction paper and the cupcake wrappers made up the igloos.

Because the Bartlett Library is celebrating cultures this winter, the children in attendance were each given a lanyard and a button because they attended the program. In order to collect all the buttons, patrons were instructed to look at the newsletter for selected programs where buttons will be available.

If you missed this program, an upcoming Youth & Teen Services program at the Bartlett Library is the "Multicultural Film Festival" program from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14. There will be short films featuring folk and fairy tales from around the world.
