OLW Middle School Students Shop for Those in Need

On Wednesday, December 7, the Target store in Arlington Heights welcomed middle school students from Our Lady of the Wayside School who were shopping for some less fortunate families. Each grade adopted one family and brought in donations that allowed them to shop for Christmas presents for that family. The students donated over $1800!

This after-school shopping experience shows the students that some families in our community ask for basic items on their Christmas wish list instead of headphones and video games. Children ask for winter clothing; parents need to include diapers and baby supplies on their wish list. "Our students think through the items that they chose and are very thoughtful with their choices. The students and teachers really enjoy this outing," said Mr. Matt Martino, a seventh grade teacher who coordinated this year's outing. OLW middle school has shopped for needy families for several years and it's a great tradition of service and giving back. .

Target agreed to open up checkout lanes just for the OLW students and teachers and parents used Target and Cartwheel coupons to help the students get as much as possible for their adopted family. The students will wrap and tag all the gifts and present them to Catholic Charities in time for Christmas.
