Fire prompts evacuation of Indianapolis hotel; several hurt

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say an early-morning fire at a three-story residential hotel in Indianapolis prompted an evacuation of the smoke-filled building and left several people injured.

The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hotel Indy on the city's northeast side. Fire officials say six people were taken to hospitals for treatment, including one listed in critical condition, and at seven others were treated at the scene.

Officials say about 45 of the hotel's roughly 60 rooms were occupied and firefighters safely rescued 10 people from windows and balconies. A bus was brought in to keep people warm and the American Red Cross was called in to help assist those displaced by the fire.

The cause is under investigation, but the fire department says it apparently started in the basement.
