Stand up and be counted in Volo
Volo will conduct a special census to turn a 35 percent jump in population into additional state tax revenue, village officials said.
The village had a population of 2,929 after the 2010 census, but 650 new homes have been added since then, Village Administrator Jonathan Meyer said. The village expects the new census will show the population is now more than 4,000, he added.
Estimates show the village will be able to capture an additional $125,000 to $150,000 annually in state revenue sharing taxes, such as motor fuel and income taxes. That funding will lessen the village's dependency on property taxes, Meyer said.
"By doing the special census, the village can capture a larger cut of state revenue and help cover our debt services, our village costs and fund capital improvements," he said. The money has not been earmarked for any specific capital improvement project, he added.
Volo is seeking applicants for temporary part- and full-time workers to help count residents for the special census early next year.
Workers will visit households and collect a few facts about everyone living there, such as name, age and relationship to the householder, officials said in a news release.
Applicants should have flexible schedules and be available to work during the week and weekends, including evenings. Openings include clerical, census taker and supervisor positions. The pay is $12 to $17 per hour, plus mileage and paid training.
Applicants must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen, not employed in law enforcement, and pass an FBI background check and general knowledge test.
Employment applications are available at villageofvolo.com. All applications should be returned to village of Volo, Attn: Jonathan Meyer, 500 S. Fish Lake Road, Volo, IL 60073. The application deadline is Dec. 16.
Those selected will be invited to training and given a work assignment that lasts four to six weeks.
