Indiana pastor in Chicago asks for help after church blast

The pastor of an Indiana church where an explosion destroyed a church building is in Chicago asking for help to rebuild

CHICAGO (AP) - The pastor of an Indiana church where an explosion destroyed a church building is in Chicago asking for help to rebuild.

A spokeswoman for the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition says Joseph Alford of Bethel Congregation Church of God & Christ in Hammond visited the organization on Thursday. He's seeking help rebuilding after Monday's explosion.

The blast destroyed a building that houses the church's food pantry, which serves hundreds of people each month. Rainbow PUSH spokeswoman Chinta Strausberg says Jackson gave Alford some food so that he can continue to feed the needy in the area.

Officials have said Monday's blast, which collapsed the building's roof and sparked a fire, was likely caused by a gas leak.

A deacon of the church was critically injured.
