Fremd tops LFA, goes to 2-0
Fremd 59, Lake Forest Academy 49: Kyle Sliwa scored a game-high 18 points and Brian Dompke had 14 to help Fremd's boys basketball team past Lake Forest Academy on Wednesday in tournament play at Mundelein.
Coach Bob Widlowski was pleased with the effort of Ryan Martin in defending Caxys standout Chris Harris, who finished with 10 points.
"Harris is really a very athletic, highly skilled player," said Widlowski, "and to hold him to 10 points is really something."
Martin hit a 3 and finished with 9 points for Fremd (2-0), which got separation by holding Lake Forest Academy to 4 points in the third quarter. The Vikings meet Elk Grove on Friday before wrapping up the tournament with Mundelein on Saturday.
Hersey 56, Hoffman Estates 42: Joe Coffaro made a pair of 3s and finished with a game-high 20 points to help the Huskies past the Hawks at Glenbrook North as Hersey picked up its first win of the season.
Eddie Mleko (16 points) and Grant Wagner (10) also broke into double figures for Hersey, while junior guard Marshall Davis paced Hoffman Estates with 13 points and junior guard Adrian Punzalan had 10.
Hersey and Hoffman Estates both have tourney records of 1-2 and will play a final game at Glenbrook North on Friday.
Barrington 60, McHenry 57: Barrington's boys basketball team withstood a 22-point fourth quarter from McHenry to earn a 60-57 victory in Crystal Lake Central tournament play Wednesday.
Blake Gosswein, Anthony Spann and Jason Boock each finished with 13 points in the Broncos' balanced scoring approach.
Boock finished with three 2s and Jack Reinhard (8 points) had 2 to help Barrington improve to 2-0.
Jacobs 51, Maine West 46: The Warriors came up short in their second contest in tournament play at Palatine to fall to 1-1 this season.
St. Charles East 70, Schaumburg 45: The Saxons dropped to 0-2 with a setback in the final game of the Ron Johnson tournament.
