Giving Thanks at the Catholic Consortium of Lake County

At the Catholic Consortium of Lake County schools in Mundelein and Wauconda, students learn much more about Thanksgiving than just merely playing dress up as Native American Indians and Pilgrims. Though the annual Thanksgiving Feast is an unforgettable event for our elementary school students, families and teachers; inside our classrooms our students discover much more preschool through 8th grade!

Thanksgiving means so many different things today - and that's OK. Some of our students wear Pilgrim hats and that's just fine. We focus on being thankful and make sure we teach the history as our students get older. We are blessed to serve youth Preschool through 8th grade in at our school that encompasses two campuses from our Mundelein and Wauconda communities, as well as our St. Mary of the Annunciation, Santa Maria del Popolo and Transfiguration parishes.

At our younger grade levels students learn to identify Thanksgiving through its social norms and acceptance in our country; learning about the Native American Indians, Pilgrims and Christopher Columbus and his voyage on the Mayflower.

Students in our older grade levels are challenged to take a deeper look at the true and raw history of Thanksgiving, including but not limited to: who was Christopher Columbus and what was his real role, how did Thanksgiving become clarified a national holiday, who truly participated in the infamous Thanksgiving feast? Challenging the minds and abilities to research and delve into their studies in a manner that is exciting, intriguing and fun; creates an environment of everlasting learning.

Going beyond the classroom our families and students work together to help our local communities, give thanks for those who have served our country and help us grow along the way. Above all we strive to be grateful for the little gifts and blessings our Lord has provided us. Our school and parish communities come together to volunteer inside and outside our school walls during this blessed time of year.
