Authorities: 2 dead in crash involving police car in Indiana

LAWRENCE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a husband and wife in their 80s have died after the car they were riding in collided with a police squad car in central Indiana.

Lawrence police say 86-year-old Norman Elling and 87-year-old Selma Elling died following the Monday afternoon crash.

Deputy police Chief Gary Woodruff says the officer, 15-year-veteran Johnathan Clark, was responding to a reported shoplifting in progress at the time of the crash. The cars collided as the officer reached an intersection and the other car was turning.

Woodruff says the officer suffered a minor injury and a police dog also riding in the squad car appeared uninjured.

Woodruff says the officer's car didn't have lights or sirens on at the time of the crash. Lawrence is an enclave on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
