Authorities: 3 dead in crash returning from band competition
BLOOMFIELD, Ind. (AP) - Authorities said three family members returning home from the Bands of America Grand National Championship in Indianapolis have died in a crash.
Indiana State Police said Sophie Rinehart, 17, David Rinehart, 46, and Ruth Rinehart, 74, of Newburgh died in the crash early Sunday on Interstate 69 in Greene County. Police said two others were injured in the crash.
Sophie Rinehart performed Saturday with the Castle High School marching band and died along with her father and his mother, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.
According to state police, David Rinehart struck a deer and pulled to the shoulder in his 2015 Honda Civic. Later, a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck driven by Mason Hartkey, 19, of Jasper, left the traffic lanes and hit the parked Honda on the shoulder.
Police said Josie Rinehart, 18, who suffered cuts and abrasions and was take to Indiana University Health hospital in Bloomington, also traveled in the Honda Civic.
Police said it is not clear why Hartkey's vehicle drove off the road. Hartkey was transferred to the hospital with a fractured arm.
State police said the investigation of the crash is still ongoing.
