Youth treated after Highland Park shooting

Authorities said Highland Park police took two juveniles into custody in connection with the shooting of a youth Thursday evening.

In a news release Friday, Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering said police were alerted by Highland Park Hospital around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. They said the youth was being treated for a gunshot wound in the emergency room.

She said officers interviewed the youth, a Highland Park High School student, and learned that an altercation had taken place in the area of Waukegan Avenue and Orchard Lane, just off a bike trail and Green Bay Road, earlier that day.

After being treated, the youth was released. His identity is not being disclosed because of his age.

After conducting several interviews, Highland Park police detectives concluded that shots were fired from a passing car.

Evidence of a shooting was recovered at the scene.

The matter was referred to juvenile court. Meanwhile, detectives are continuing the investigation to identify a suspect who may be the shooter.

Highland Park High School has sent an alert to students and families and are offering counseling.
