Taunts of Hispanics reported post-election in Pence hometown
COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - School administrators in Vice President-elect Mike Pence's Indiana hometown of Columbus have called for civility and respect after reports of Hispanic students being taunted.
The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/2f0gVip ) that Bartholomew Consolidated Schools Superintendent Jim Roberts on Friday cited "remarks and behaviors that are particularly hurtful." Parent Felipe Martinez said his two sons who are Hispanic have twice been intimidated with chants of "build that wall," including on Election Day.
The chant was common at President-elect Donald Trump's campaign rallies.
The superintendent didn't specifically mention the chants but said some behaviors have compromised "efforts to provide a welcoming and diverse learning culture." Roberts asked students and families to report any concerns so they could be immediately addressed. He said the school wouldn't "tolerate actions that demonstrate a lack of understanding and respect for our differences."
