Boys track: Matzek has a throwing future at Illinois

Prospect senior Billy Matzek signed an national letter of intent Wednesday to join the Illinois men's track and field team.

Last spring, Matzek was a state qualifier in both the shot put and discus. He placed eighth in one of the deepest shot put fields in state history with a throw of 57 feet, 6 inches.

Matzek will have plenty of elite Mid-Suburban League company in the throws this spring, as Fremd's Ethan Hanson and Barrington's John Stefan will also be in pursuit of repeat state trips and perhaps medals. Stefan was sixth last season, and Hanson finished 10th.
