Delaware County looking to prevent any ransomware attacks

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Delaware County officials have authorized an investigation into how to prevent a hacking attack like the one that hit neighboring Madison County.

The (Muncie) Star Press reported (http://tspne.ws/2fyZKWb ) Wednesday that Delaware County officials authorized their information technology department to find out how to prevent a similar hack. Madison County commissioners last week said they would pay a ransom demanded from hackers who locked government staff out of their computers. It's known as a ransomware attack.

Delaware County Attorney John Brooke says he'll also check with the county's insurance agent to determine coverage for a ransomware attack. Madison County officials said they paid the undisclosed ransom amount at the advice of their insurance carrier.

Delaware County officials said they are helping Madison County with emergency services computer functions.
