Learn Elgin Road Race history Tuesday

The Elgin Community Network "Elgin Alive Series" program continues with "Elgin Road Race History" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the Meadows Community Rooms A-B of Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Beginning in 1910, a year before the Indianapolis 500, some of the nation's best drivers and mechanics competed in a 300-mile race on a 8.5-mile circuit of rural roads just west of Elgin. Continuing until 1920, with the exception of the war years, and resumed one more time in 1933 these contests attracted thousands of people to Elgin each year.

Using a variety of photos from the actual races, Elgin historian Jerry Turnquist will retell this exciting chapter in Elgin history.
